How To Set Up The DDJ-FLX4
Connecting Headphones, Speakers and Power
The FLX4 is ideal for beginners because the rear layout keeps inputs and outputs simple and easy to understand.
To connect your headphones, plug them into the 1/8th inch (3.5mm) mini-stereo TRS jack on the front of the controller.
To connect your speakers, use the RCA line level output labelled MASTER on the back panel.
RCA cables are commonly used with household sound systems, soundbars, and hi-fi amplifiers. The jacks are colour-coded for easy identification: red for the right speaker and white for the left.
There is also an unbalanced 1/4 inch TRS microphone input with a dedicated volume control knob located right next to the RCA sockets.
USB-C Power and Connectivity
On the left side of the rear panel, you will find two USB-C ports. These are used to power the controller and connect it to a computer, smartphone, or tablet.
When connected to a laptop, the FLX4 draws USB bus power directly through the cable, meaning you do not need a separate power supply. If you are using a tablet or smartphone, plugging an AC adapter or power bank into the secondary USB-C port allows the controller to power itself and pass a charge through to your mobile device.
The FLX4 also supports Bluetooth connectivity for mobile devices. However, if you prefer a wired USB-C connection, audio from your microphone will pass directly through the USB signal alongside your master music output, making it easy to record live mixes or streams without needing an external audio interface.
3 Settings Every FLX4 Owner Should Change First
Having taught thousands of beginners inside our FLX4 courses, we have spotted three factory settings that consistently trip people up during their first few mixing sessions. Adjusting these right away will save you a lot of frustration.
1. Turn down your master output before playing audio: The FLX4 can output a surprisingly hot signal straight out of the box. Set both your channel trim knobs and the master volume dial to 12 o’clock before playing any tracks through your speakers to avoid sudden blasting volume or distortion.
2. Set your default loop and beat-jump size to 4 beats: In your rekordbox or Serato preferences, set your default jump length to 4 beats. The factory settings often default to smaller beat increments that can throw off your timing mid-mix when you hit a pad.
3. Switch Smart CFX and Smart Fader off while learning the basics: Features like Smart Fader are great fun, but relying on them early on builds automated habits that make manual beatmatching and EQing much harder down the road. Keep them turned off while mastering core mixing, then bring them back in once your ear is trained.
Setting Up The DDJ-FLX4 On A Computer With Rekordbox
To get the full hardware experience, pairing your controller with a laptop is the most flexible approach.
First, download and install the latest version of rekordbox on your computer. To get the hardware connected and controlling the software:
- Connect your speakers and headphones to the DDJ-FLX4
- Launch rekordbox
- Connect the DDJ-FLX4 to your computer using the supplied USB-C cable
To make sure sound comes out where you expect, check your audio settings inside the Preferences tab:
On macOS:
- Audio: DDJ-FLX4
- Output Channels: Master Output: DDJ-FLX4 : MASTER + computer audio device
- Headphones Output: DDJ-FLX4 : PHONES
If PC MASTER OUT is switched off in rekordbox, Master Output will simply read DDJ-FLX4 : MASTER.
On Windows:

Using Computer Speakers With The DDJ-FLX4 In Rekordbox
rekordbox allows you to route audio through your computer’s built-in speakers. This is very handy if you do not have external speakers available.
To enable this, click the PC Master Out icon located to the right of the Settings gear cog in the top right corner of the rekordbox screen.

Setting Up The DDJ-FLX4 On A Computer With Serato DJ Lite
The FLX4 automatically hardware-unlocks Serato DJ Lite for free without needing a subscription. If you prefer Serato’s workflow, you can plug in and start mixing straight away. You can also upgrade to Serato DJ Pro later if you want access to advanced performance features.
First, download and install Serato DJ Lite on your computer.
To connect your setup:
- Connect speakers and headphones to the DDJ-FLX4
- Launch Serato DJ Lite
- Connect the DDJ-FLX4 to your computer using the supplied USB-C cable
If you are on Windows and no sound comes out after connecting, open Serato’s Preferences, go to the Audio tab, and check Use Laptop Speakers.
Using Computer Speakers With Serato DJ Lite
Just like in rekordbox, Serato DJ Lite lets you play master audio out of your computer speakers when external monitors aren’t handy.
To enable this, open Preferences in Serato DJ Lite, select the Audio tab, and tick the box for Use Laptop Speakers.

Setting Up The DDJ-FLX4 With A Phone Or Tablet
If you want the convenience of DJing on the go or don’t want to use a computer, the rekordbox mobile app is for you.
Make sure you have the latest version installed on your device. You can download it for iOS and iPadOS or get it on Android.
To connect via USB cable:
- Connect speakers and headphones to the DDJ-FLX4
- Power the controller by plugging a USB-C power adapter or power bank into the power throughput port
- Launch the rekordbox app
- Connect a USB-C cable from the controller’s data port to your smartphone or tablet
To connect via Bluetooth:
- Connect speakers and headphones to the DDJ-FLX4
- Power the controller using a USB-C power plug or power bank
- Launch the rekordbox mobile app and rotate your screen horizontally to close the library screen
- Tap the rekordbox logo at the top centre of the screen
- Tap the Bluetooth option and select DDJ-FLX4

How To Use Smart Fader And Smart CFX
The Pioneer DJ DDJ-FLX4 includes two automated performance tools designed to help beginners execute smooth transitions and creative build-ups.
Smart Fader
When activated, Smart Fader automatically manages BPM alignment, volume, and EQ levels as you move the crossfader, making it easy to blend between songs of drastically different genres and tempos.
Smart CFX
Smart CFX allows you to apply multi-effect combinations, such as filtered delays, echoes, and reverbs, using a single turn of the Parameter knob.
Combining Smart Fader and Smart CFX
Once you understand how both tools work, you can combine them for dynamic transitions. For instance, you can use Smart Fader to handle the tempo jump while applying a Smart CFX reverb build-up to mask the transition point.
