When you’re just starting out on your journey into music production, it can feel overwhelming and complicated. One of the first hurdles is ‘what music production software should I use?’ There isn’t just one answer to this question; however, some production software is much easier to get started with than others. What is Serato Studio?

Serato Studio is a music production and DJ remix software. It’s perfect for anybody just getting started on their journey as its so simple to use. You don’t need to know how to play a keyboard or piano, what a scale is or how to play in A minor, for example. You don’t even need to know how to write a drum pattern. Serato Studio has the option to automate these complicated tasks meaning you can focus on producing or remixing a song quickly. 

How much does it cost?

Serato Studio is free to download, unlike other music production software making it a great starting point. Only when you advance and want to unlock more features and functions, do you need to pay for it. This is also another great reason to use Serato Studio if you’re just getting started. How do DJs remix songs?

Naturally, as we’re an online DJ school, we also love the way Serato Studio can feel very familiar to DJs as the company also own a DJ software called Serato DJ Lite and Serato DJ Pro. One of the best ways to get into music production is to start creating DJ remixes, DJ edits or mash-ups. A DJ remix or edit merely is taking one of your favourite songs and then editing and adding new elements, drums or instruments to that song to make it your own. In turn, helping make their DJ sets unique to others!

Part One – Your First DJ Intro Edit

In this first part of the series, you will learn how to navigate around Serato Studio. We show you how to work with audio, set up endless slicer’s and quickly make a useful DJ intro edit!


Part Two – Building Drums and Creating Extended Edits

One of the first things any new producer needs to learn is how to write a drum pattern. Serato Studio is excellent because there is the option to automate this process as well as do it manually. It’s a perfect tool for learning how a drum pattern’s together. You will create your first scene and then add that to the intro edit made in the previous video.


Part Three – Acapella Wordplay Intro Edit

In this tutorial, we take it up a level! Wordplay is a technique used by battle and performance DJs to transition between songs. Acapella intros are also handy tools for DJs as they can layer the acapella over the instrumental of another song creating the perfect blend. B combining both of these techniques in this tutorial, you will start to see the creative power of Serato Studio as a music production tool. 


Part Four – Creating A Basic DJ Mash-Up

Part Six – Adding Automation & Mastering

The final touches in a DJ edit or remix are what make your idea come to life and sound powerful in your sets alongside the rest of your library. In this video, you will learn how to add some automation to the FX as well as mixdown the different elements. Getting your levels right and mastering the song can usually take a long time with other production software however Serato Studio has made it really simple. Watch to find out about the final touches you can apply to your DJ edits and remixes.
