The AlphaTheta DDJ-GRV6 is an excellent choice for anyone after a controller with advanced pro-inspired features and great build quality – whether you’re looking to upgrade or you’re a complete beginner. But if you’ve just unboxed you’re new controller and you’re ready to get mixing, where do you start?
This guide has you covered. We’ll take you through how to get everything you need set up with your DDJ-GRV6 so you’ll be ready to start mixing in no time!
How Do I Power the DDJ-GRV6?
Powering your DDJ-GRV6 is super straightforward but it depends on the device you’re using:
- For desktops and laptops: Simply connect the DDJ-GRV6 to your computer using the included USB Type-C cable. The controller will draw power directly from your computer.
- For mobile devices: As the mobile device won’t supply power to the GRV6, you have to connect the DDJ-GRV6 to an external power source using the USB Type-C port. Any regular USB charger, such as the one you use to charge a laptop or phone, should work fine.
How Do I Connect the DDJ-GRV6 to Speakers?
To connect the DDJ-GRV6 to speakers, use its built-in sound card for direct audio output. There are 3 different speaker outputs on the back of the GRV6 – Booth Monitor outputs, along with Master outputs in both TRS ¼ inch and RCA. The Booth Monitor is designed to be used alongside one of the Master outputs so you can have speakers to monitor the mix in the DJ booth while the main Master goes to the club’s PA system.
Most of the time, and certainly at home, you’ll just use the Master. Depending on your speaker setup, use TRS or RCA cables. TRS cables are ideal for professional-grade speakers and arguably have a better, less noisy sound, but RCA is fine for most uses. Plug the cables into the appropriate output ports on the back of the DDJ-GRV6 and connect them to your speakers or amplifier. Test the audio levels before starting to make sure everything’s sounding ok.
Which DJ Software Does the DDJ-GRV6 Work With?
The DDJ-GRV6 is natively compatible with two major DJ software platforms – rekordbox and Serato:
- rekordbox: Works on both desktop (Mac/Windows) and mobile (iOS/Android). It’s ideal for DJs looking for the classic ‘CDJ’ club setup and integration with the Groove Circuit. Note that mobile playback is limited to channels 1 and 2.
- Serato DJ Pro: Fully supported, including advanced Stems FX functionality. Serato is great for DJs who prioritize live remixing and track isolation, making it a go-to for creative performance setups. The included overlay sheet makes sure that the Stems FX controls map seamlessly.
To get started, download and install your preferred software from the official rekordbox or Serato websites, considering which feature set best aligns with your DJing style.
