Tone play mixing is a creative technique used by a lot of DJs who perform routines. It can also be used to transition between music in club sets and a way to blend different genres together. The art of tone play is being able to perform the melody of one song with the notes and sounds from another song. This can be done with hot cues or other technology such as pitch shifting/keyboard performance modes found on a range of equipment/software.

Our dedicated DJ tutor Jamie Hartley started working in the industry as a full time DJ over a decade ago at the age of 16. Since 2014 he’s worked to build Crossfader from a small UK based DJ school where he taught aspiring DJs in his studio, into what you see today, a global online DJ school and community.
From working one to one for years in a studio Jamie has developed foolproof and systematic ways of breaking down DJ skills and techniques so you can master them! A lot of other DJ schools will show you how things work rather than teach you the creative skills needed to help you stand out from the crowd.
What our students say
Crossfader fader has lifted the veil of secrecy on tone play and produced a high quality course giving step by step instruction on how to be successful at tone play. The practice files and exercises given really gave a hands on approach to this advanced technique. It will get your ideas flowing in no time.

This course taught me the basics of what is traditionally a skill for the battle DJ’s and allowed me to create interesting ideas for transitions in my performances as an open format mobile DJ. The course was easy to follow with each idea broken down into small bite size chunks which enabled me to follow then go practice before moving on. There was a small element of music theory which was easily understandable through the use of the included CF music tools, downloadable through a link in the course. Finally, the course has taught me a new skill which I’ve implemented in my DJ’ing, enabled me to become a better DJ and performer in less time at a very reasonable cost.
